Als keizer Marcus Aurelius merkt dat hij spoedig zal sterven, besluit hij zijn wrede zoon Commodus te onterven en in plaats daarvan zijn generaal Livius, die tevens Commodus' halfbroer is, als opvolger aan te wijzen. Omdat een aantal officieren bang zijn voor hun baan in de door Livius beoogde vreedzame politiek, bedenken ze een plan om de keizer te vermoorden voordat hij zijn testament officieel kan bekrachtigen.
